A sensor preferably capable of high resolution sensing over a large operating range includes a composite diaphragm containing nanotubes or nanowires. The nanotubes or nanowires preferably form a mat that is embedded in insulating material, such as high dielectric or insulating thin films. The nanotubes or nanowires may provide the diaphragm with a Young's modulus of greater than about 1000 GPa and a tensile strength of greater than about 100 GPa. The strain in the nanotubes or nanowires may be measured by a change in resistance, voltage, current or capacitance.

A quality inspection system and method for cigarette products or filter tips, the inspection system comprising a mobile platform (1) having an automatic directional drive device, a control system, a wireless data communication device (2), a comprehensive test device (3) and a sampling manipulator (4). A single inspection system can inspect and control the quality of a plurality of product manufacturing machines by automatically navigating a sampling system and an inspection system. The inspection system eliminates system errors caused by concurrent use of a plurality of inspection systems and realizes one-time sampling and measurement, while reducing measurement errors caused by temperature changes, solving the problem of long-distance transport between sampling and measurement, avoiding sample damage during sample transport, effectively reducing the calibration workload of the inspection system, improving working efficiency, and lowering production costs. According to the present invention an improved device and method for testing the integrity of electrical connectors on a substrate and/or for providing for burn-in of a semi-conductor on a substrate is provided. The test unit includes a mounting fixture having a plurality of pins carried thereon preferably spring loaded. At least some of the pins are provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced conducting members which are electrically insulated from each other. These pins are configured and mounted on the fixture to move into and out of engagement with a portion at least two and preferably four adjacent connectors on the substrate thereby allowing a single pin to contact up to four or more contacts on the substrate. In addition to the single pin contacting four or more connectors, the pins are configured such that they fit between the connectors rather than resting on top of them with the electrically conducting members contacting the sides of the solder balls thereby providing a extended contact surface as opposed to contacting the tops of the connectors on the substrate. Each of the separate conducting members on the pins is connected to a test circuit and/or a burn-in circuit which provides the appropriate test signals and/or power to the various connectors on the substrate.

Apparatus for testing an elongate member 1 comprises three rollers 3, 5 spaced apart on a resilient beam 2 to engage the member and means for measuring the distortion of the beam 2 in response to deflection of the member by the roller 5 when displaced relative to the beam 2 by movement of an adjustment member 7 connected to a carrier 6a either by eccentric pivoting or sliding of the roller 5 on the carrier. Distortion of the beam 2 by bending may be due to tension in a rope 1 and may be measured by electrical resistance wire or foil strain gauges 12 in a bridge circuit or semi-conductor strain gauges with a meter or by a dial gauge 11 on a detachable arm 8. In the embodiment of Figs.1, 2, the roller 5 is carried by and is freely rotatable on an axle 6 rigid with and eccentric to a cylinder 6a which can be rotated relative to the beam 2 by a handle 7 through 180 degrees to deflect the rope 1. In the embodiment of Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the cylinder 6a is replaced by a sprocket wheel driven through an endless chain by an electric motor secured to an extension of the beam 8 which is stopped by actuation of a micro-switch when the roller 5 has deflected the rope 1 sufficiently. The motor drives the chain through a worm and a worm-wheel secured to the shaft of a second sprocket wheel and the motor may be replaced by a hand wheel driving the worm. In the embodiment of Fig. 6, (not shown) the cylinder 6a is replaced by a crank wheel eccentrically connected to the roller 5 and operated hydraulically by a piston and cylinder. The deflector-roller may be at one end, Fig. 7 (not shown). As shown in Fig. 8 a deflector-roller 33 is freely mounted on a hub 34 supported on a rectangularly cross-sectioned portion 36 of a shaft 35, having one end 37 keyed to a beam 42 and the other end 38 in threaded engagement with a flanged handwheel 45 rotatably retained on the beam 42 by a thrust plate 46, whereby the roller 33 can be cammed upward by rotation of the wheel 45. Loadings on stay wires, endless rope conveyers and running ropes may be measured. Different size rollers can adapt the apparatus to various rope thicknesses and they may be coated with plastics to avoid damaging plastics protected wires.

In a nuclear reactor period meter, a neutronsensitive ionization chamber supplies a tuned circuit the output from which is applied to a logarithmic A.C. amplifier which in turn feeds a linear rectifier. The output from the latter supplies a neutron flux level meter and, in parallel, a D.C. amplifier and differentiator which provide a signal representing the reciprocal of the reactor period. The tuned circuit comprises a resonant series LC circuit of high-Q value. The logarithmic amplifier includes both D.C. feedback to stabilize against temperature variations of the parameters and A.C. feedback through semi-conductor diodes to provide the logarithmic characteristic. Phase correcting networks are inserted to prevent instability in the feedback loop caused by integrating effects. The linear rectifier comprises an A.C.-coupled saturating amplifier associated with an earthedcollector chopper transistor, driven in synchronism with the input waveform. In an alternative arrangement, a D.C. logarithmic amplifier is employed.
