An application of Golgi protein 73 (GP73) and a substance, used for detecting the concentration of GP73, in preparation of a product for screening or assisting in diagnosing liver cirrhosis-related or liver fibrosis-related diseases, or in preparation of a product for assisting in determining prognosis of a disease. It is proved that GP73 can serve as a novel liver cirrhosis marker. Particularly, GP73 also has diagnostic value on liver cirrhosis caused by non-b hepatitis virus infection, while has no diagnostic value on primary liver cancer. La présente invention concerne une application de la protéine de Golgi 73 (GP73) et une substance, utilisée pour détecter la concentration de GP73, dans la préparation d'un produit pour le dépistage ou l'aide au diagnostic de maladies liées à la cirrhose du foie ou liées à la fibrose du foie, ou dans la préparation d'un produit pour aider à déterminer le pronostic d'une maladie. Il a été prouvé que GP73 peut servir de nouveau marqueur de la cirrhose du foie. In a data store uniaxial anisotropic magnetic thin film material is supported on a non- magnetic conductive layer, e.g. of copper, coated on a magnetic, preferably ferromagnetic, substrate. The printed digit/sense lines of the store are connected at one end to the copper layer, which acts as a return conductor, and it is stated that the use of a thin layer reduces the noise induced in the sense line due to eddy currents flowing in the layer after a write operation. The ferromagnetic layer may also be thin and may in turn be carried by a conductive substrate of copper or molybdenum. The substrate in each case acts as a heat sink. It is stated that noise reduction increases with an increase in permeability and a decrease in conductivity of the material beneath the conductive layer, and that there is an optimum thickness for the copper layer of the order of 17 microns.

A microsensor system for determining water vapor content of the ambient atmosphere that uses a thin film suspended ceramic diaphragm structure featuring an embedded, patterned thin film heater, temperature sensor and an external film of an hygroscopic salt stabilized in a water-insoluble, crosslinked polymer matrix and contacting a pair of patterned electrodes which are proximate to the heater. The heater controls a selected electrical parameter of the salt to a fixed, predetermined value, as determined by its electrical characteristics. The dew point of the atmosphere is determined based on the dynamic relation with the salt dehydration temperature.

[Also in Division H3] A microwave detector arrangement (see Division H3), utilizes a crystal diode 4 which is secured to the upper end of a connecting pin 6 held in a cylindrical conductive shielding sleeve 8 by means of an insulating ring 7. Connecting spring 5 is connected to the sleeve 8, the terminals of the detector being sleeve 8 and pin 6. The assembly is located in a conductive stump 2 provided at one corner of waveguide 1; the pin 6 extends into a vertical bore 9 provided in the middle of the side wall 10, while sleeve 8 lies within a circular aperture in stump 2, leaving narrow gap 11 so as to form a high capacitance which is substantially a short-circuit for microwaves. The gap 11 preferably has a height equal to one-quarter wavelength at the operating frequency.

A screen which scintillates under the action of alpha-particles or X-ray comprises a carrier of polystyrene or polymethyl methacrylate with particles of a phosphor wholly or partially embedded therein, the screen being prepared by incorporating phosphor particles in a liquid, producing polystyrene or polymethyl methacrylate, in such a manner that a majority of the phosphor particles will be positioned closer to one of the major surfaces of the carrier then to the opposing surface, and solidifying the liquid by polymerization. The liquid can comprise styrene monomer or methyl methacrylate monomer or partially polymerized such materials, a solution or dispersion of polystyrene in styrene monomer or in partially polymerized styrene, or a solution or dispersion of polymethyl methacrylate in methyl methacrylate monomer or in partially polymerized methyl methacrylate. Polymerization can be effected by utilizing heat, U.V. or I.R. irradiation, or pressure. In one example, zinc sulphide is dusted over a temporary flat supporting surface of glass to which it may be bonded lightly by phosphoric acid, and a liquid consisting of partially polymerized methyl methacrylate together with a curing agent such as benzoyl peroxide is poured over the phosphor layer and polymerization completed by exposure under an I.R. lamp. Backing plates of polymethyl methacrylate or glass are attached to the surface of the film so produced by a glue consisting of partially polymerized methyl methacrylate containing a small quantity of benzoin and the glue hardened by exposure to U.V. light. The film is then removed from the glass plate and coated with one or more light reflecting and/or excluding metallic, e.g. aluminium, films by e.g. electrode sputtering, vaporization under reduced pressure or by transfer from a temporary supporting surface. Alternatively, or additionally thin films consisting of a resin with a dissolved dye can be used. In another example, the phosphor is suspended in the monomer of, or partially polymerized, styrene or methyl methacrylate with polymerization agents, and the liquid poured into a flat dish and the phosphor allowed to settle, polymerization being thereafter effected by heat and/or U.V. light. In a further example, the phosphor is dusted over the surface of the liquid monomer of, or partially polymerized, styrene or methyl methacrylate and the liquid polymerized. Organic phosphors may be used.

A piezo-resistive strain gauge comprising a wafer of semi-conductor material having a cubic crystal structure is made insensitive to transverse and shear strains by choosing the orientation of the plane of the wafer in relation to the crystal lattice according to one of three given formulµ which express this orientation in terms of the piezo-resistive and compliance coefficients of the material. One of the formulµ relates to current measurement in the plane of the wafer and the other two relate to current measurement perpendicular to this plane. Specific examples are given for N and P type germanium, silicon, and lead telluride.

[Also in Division G1] A temperature indicating device comprises a body 1 of birefringent material the birefringence of which varies with temperature, the body having both a polarizing layer 2 and a reflective surface 3 disposed on opposite surfaces thereof. In use, the body 1 which may be a single crystal of barium strontium niobate in the form of a thin film is located in an environment the temperature of which is required and a parallel beam of white light 4 is directed to the body through a window defined on one side of the body. The colour of the output beam 6 from the device is observed and such colour is indicative of the temperature of the environment in which the device is located. The polarizing layers 2 which may be provided with or separate from the reflective surfaces 3 may be of plastics material.

At least part of a readout pattern including carrier collecting electrodes, capacitors, thin-film transistors, data lines and gate lines is formed by vapor deposition or printing. This is formed separately from a semiconductor thick film. The semiconductor thick film and readout pattern constitute a flat panel X-ray detector (FPD) is mounted in a case to form a unit. A weight reduction is achieved by using the semiconductor thick film in place of a conventional glass substrate. The FPD manufactured in this way is free from great restrictions in time of transport and use.
